Hey! Here's a bit about me and what I enjoy doing:
Among other things, I’m a woodbutcher, craftsman, songsmith, farmhand and friend. That's a short way to say my joys in life come primarily from building things (mainly unique spaces and convivial tools), making music, working the land and cultivating meaningful relationships with the folk I meet along the way...

I've put this website together primarily as a navigational aid to help you find out where to go to find out more about the various things I'm currently doing or have done in the past. It's also where I've decided to publish excerpts from my constant stream of random thoughts and ideas. Some of my friends have gotten very bored of me emptying out all my latest ideas and fascinations every time we go for a beer, so I thought it better that I empty them here instead.

Over the past decade or so, I've started a multitude of businesses, projects, websites and blogs and recently I've begun to lose track of it all. So this is a kind of portal into all that stuff, with a few extras thrown in on top, to help me stay organised, and help you find what you're looking for.

Being endlessly curious about almost everything, I sometimes really struggle to find focus. But I've managed to whittle down my current interests to four major categories: farming, handmade houses, adventure travel and music. These are the areas of my life which, if only I had the time, I could obsess about individually and never get bored. However, the constant mix of all four of them provides my days with a healthy balance of intellectual and emotional stimulation, creative freedom inspired by childlike wonder, and hard but satisfying graft.

FARMING
In 2018, I discovered the exciting world of regenerative agriculture - through the work of Richard Perkins at Ridgedale Permaculture in Sweden. Ever since, the idea of becoming a farmer and growing nourishing food for my community, whilst building topsoil and restoring biodiversity has consumed me almost every waking hour.
I’m currently working as an apprentice grower at North Aston Organics.

HANDMADE HOUSES
After drunkenly buying a school bus on eBay and converting it into my very own country-cottage-on-wheels, I've recently started helping others do the same sort of thing through my work with the Handmade House Project.
You can read more about the bus conversion at Nick Bought A Bus.

ADVENTURES
A few years ago, I went on a series of three very long bike rides: down the west coast of the USA, then across the Alps from Brighton to Venice in winter, and then a small jaunt across sub-Saharan Africa from Cape Town to Kampala.
My photos, maps, and journals from these trips can be found at nickfromengland.com, where I will also document the upcoming trips I am planning.

MUSIC
Spinning Yarn is the name I am currently giving to my collective music-making solo efforts and collaborations. I am working on three album-length recordings (two of contemporary folk songs and one of experimental piano music), which I hope to release by April 2021.
You can hear my demos and get news about upcoming performances and releases here: www.spinningyarn.co.uk
